In an almost Esther-like twist of fate, wherein Haman was hanged on the very gallows he had made to execute Mordicai (Esther 7: 10), Oranthal James Simpson will finally be on the receiving end of justice in a criminal case.
The twist of fate here?…Exactly 13 years TO THE DAY, after Simpson was acquitted of killing his wife Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman, a jury in Las Vegas found him guilty on all 12 counts connected to an incident in Las Vegas related to attempts to reclaim sports memorabilia. Sentencing has not been finalized as of this writing, but he could spend the rest of his life in prison. At long last, earthly justice will be deliverd to this charismatic psychopath. And in a further bit of irony in this case, not a drop of blood was spilled, unlike the gruesome details surrounding his other “brush” with the law.
It is the general consensus (which I also hold) that Simpson benefited 13 years ago from a jury seated in Los Angeles county consisting of the only twelve human beings alive and on the planet at the time who did not think he was guilty of the crimes he was charged with. Even the surprised look on his face and those of his legal team as the verdict was read in 1995, support that notion. Yes, there was some sloppy police work done, and some racially incendiary comments made along the way by key members of the prosecution’s witness list, but there certainly was enough evidence to have convinced the vast majority of people that he was guilty. [Note: Every moment of the trial was televised, so there were effectively 200+ million jurors around the U.S.] The trial’s outcome has been a favorite comedic punchline for guys like Jay Leno, for the past 13 years. AND the evidence pointing to guilt in the criminal case was sufficient to result in a guilty verdict in his civil trial related to his involvement in the murder of Ron Goldman. That jury got it right!
While Simpson has FINALLY been found guilty of crimes in an earthly court and will pay for it, we ALL have been found guilty of crimes in a heavenly court. Psalm 14 2-3 tell us:
“The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. The have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not one.”
And Romans 3: 10-12 says:
” None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands, no one seeks God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
In an example of irony, earthly justice will now be administered to O.J. Simpson 13 years after the fact. In an even greater case of irony, in this case heavenly irony, OUR justice was administered approximately 2,000 years before the fact.
Psalm 14 and Romans 3 describe us. And the heavenly justice we deserve, was graciously, lovingly, and obediently received for us by Jesus Christ. I have no idea what O.J. Simpson’s spiritual condition is. And while I am glad that earthly justice for his earthly crimes will now be realized, I do hope that he receives the good news of the Gospel, that the sentence for his heavenly crimes has already been paid.
Simpson is going to the “big house” for a long time. But as the song says, the Father has a different big house, with a big, big yard, where we can play football. It would be good to see O.J. back in action on the field.
