“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
On the occasion of this past Saturday, a certain family that I know of, exercised this constitutional right, combined with legislation passed in 1995 by the Texas Legislature, and signed into law by then Texas Governor George W. Bush, that allows qualified citizens of the State of Texas to be trained and licensed to carry a concealed handgun on their persons.
On this past Saturday, the patriarch (age 83), the matriarch (age 77), along with a daughter, a daughter-in-law and a grand daughter received training to obtain licenses for the first time. A son, another grand daughter, and said grand daughter’s husband, all received the required training to renew existing licenses. As a surprise bonus, the brother-in-law of the daughter mentioned above also received training for a new license. All successfully demonstrated shooting proficiency and passed written tests. After processing by appropriate State authorities, CHLs will be issued.
And, if the statistics showing a reduction in crime, represented by the first ten years of legal “concealed carry” in the State of Texas, remain consistent in the future, the State of Texas will be that much safer from crime because of the actions of this certain family.
Oh, by the way, since some who oppose private gun ownership and rights to carry handguns regard this sort of pursuit to be associated with low bred, ignorant and unenlightened people, I can assure that all of the members of the aforementioned family are college educated, well adjusted, and productive citizens. Just exercising the rights and privileges granted them.
