The Associated Press is reporting that the sexually transmitted Human Papillomavirus (HPV) that causes cervical cancer in women is poised to become one of the leading causes of oral cancer in men. Studies suggestoral sex is associated with HPV-related oral cancers, but a cause-effect relationship has not been proved. You can read the whole AP article here.
I don’t recall exactly where I read it, but I do remember that scientists from a number of fields, social, psychological and medical are concerned that more, and younger people are engaging in risky oral sex acts. One of the hypotheses that has been advanced related to this is that some young people have misunderstood the definition of “sex”, and have incorrectly concluded that the term only applies to intercourse. One one hand, their confusion is somewhat understandable. Recall that Bill Clinton “did not have sexual relations with that woman…Monica Lewinsky.” In fairness to the kids, if the former president of the United States isn’t clear on the definition of “is”, oops, I mean “sex,” how can a young person be expected to?
I remember having a brief, but emphatic monologue (I could not in honesty call it a conversation, as it was only me talking) with my kids about unmarried sex. I hope other parents are doing the same. But knowing full well that many are not, does anyone else see the benefit to comprehensive sexual abstinence training for young people? Not so-called “safe sex” education, but NO-SEX education.
